Vietnam can be an amazing place to travel: bustling city life of big cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh (or Saigon), Da Nang, Nha Trang, beautiful nature, amazing & cheap food, and accommodating people! Sounds like a perfect recipe for an amazing vacation. However, not being able to bring our snus supply through customs in Vietnam due to the limit can be a vacation-killer. When browsing through supermarkets, specialized tobacco shops in Hoi An, there doesn't seem to be any snus. So, where to buy snus in Hoi An? That's the big bad question we at SnusLAB are here to answer for you!

Introduction

After looking for places that sell snus in Hoi An, we have concluded this list of places below. We asked customers who lived in these places for common places they would get their snus from, and rank them from the "Most Convenient" to "Least likely to find".

Places with the potential to sell snus in Hoi An:

Tobacco stores

Tobacco stores in Hoi An usually have a wide selection of tobacco products such as: cigarettes, vapes, cigars, electric tobacco (iQOS), pipe tobacco, hookah/shisha, Vietnamese "thuốc lào", rolling tobacco, or accessories. From all the tobacco stores we visited in Hoi An, all of them lack any type of smokeless tobacco: snus, nicotine pouches, dip, or chewing tobacco. We explored further by asking the reason for the lack of snus in Hoi An, or Vietnam with the store clerk, and almost all of them do not have any prior knowledge to snus, nicotine pouches, or any other type of smokeless tobacco.

Still, we found a unique Japanese tobacco shop in Hoi An. They have one type of Japanese chewing tobacco, though it's expensive. Snus in specialty shops for foreign goods in Hoi An is sometimes a hit or miss, since they often "do not sell that well". Therefore, it is difficult to buy snus in Hoi An, or in Vietnam in general. 

Convenience stores

Convenience stores in Hoi An ranges from small street vendor to more established stores such as Winmart. Street vendors here often offer a smaller selection of tobacco product, such as: cigarettes, rolling tobacco, vapes, or "thuốc lào". The same result was found in bigger stores in Hoi An, none of them offer snus, nicotine pouches, or any other form of smokeless tobacco. The lack of snus presence in Hoi An, or in Vietnam, is replaced by other more popular, accessible, and cheaper alternatives such as cigarettes, or vapes. 

 

Gas stations

Unlike gas stations in the U.S or Europe, gas stations in Hoi An do not offer any extra products than gas. We have found exceptions to this on highway gas stations, where they would have everything from bathrooms, food courts, tea area, kids area to private dining rooms, and meeting rooms. Snus in gas stations in Hoi An are often a rare sights, more often or not they do not have them. Therefore, finding snus in gas stations in Hoi An is not possible.

Duty-free shops

We hoped to find snus at Hoi An International Airport's duty-free shops. They usually offer a wide selection of foreign goods like snacks, wine, spirits, alcohol, and cigarettes. After visiting 5 duty-free shops at the airport, they told us that they used to have snus and nicotine pouches before the pandemic in 2019. However, due to the lack of foreign visits for vacation, demand plummeted. Snus is not recognizable by the Vietnamese people. Therefore, the majority of customers are foreigners who had prior knowledge about snus or nicotine pouches.

 

Pharmacies 

There were no snus or nicotine pouches in the smaller pharmacies. However, we found American made nicotine patches that sticks on to your skin at a bigger pharmacies chain. This could be an alternative to snus or nicotine pouches, but this lack the common flavor that comes with snus which can be a different experience. Despite this, imported American made nicotine patches usually fetches upwards of 1.000.000 VND for a pack.

 

Vape stores

Vapes stores in Hoi An only offer vaporizers, e-liquids, batteries and chargers, atomizers, or accessories. When asking the owners of vape stores in Hoi An, they have little to no knowledge of snus or nicotine pouches. This is also a common sentiment among Vietnamese people that leads to the lack of snus consumption in this Southeast Asian nation.

 

Online retailers 

Established snus brands such as VELO, LYFT, ZYN, Siberia currently do not offer shipment to Vietnam as of the writing of this article. Therefore, the best bet to buy from their websites is through neighboring Asian countries such as Japan, Thailand, Pakistan, and have someone take it for you.

 

Why is it so hard to find snus in Vietnam?
